Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, is a type of alcohol that is produced through the fermentation of sugar or starch found in various plant materials. It is a clear, colourless liquid and is commonly used in the food & beverage industry, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, industrial and electronics for various uses.
Ethanol is produced through a process called fermentation. This involves the conversion of sugars or starches, such as those found in crops like sugarcane, sugarbeets, grains or fruits, into ethanol and carbon dioxide. The fermentation process is carried out by yeast or bacteria in the absence of oxygen. Once fermentation is complete, the resulting mixture is distilled to separate and concentrate the ethanol. Learn more about the production process in our blog.
Distillation is a process used to separate a mixture of liquids based on the differences in their boiling points. It relies on the principle that when a liquid is heated, the component with the lower boiling point vaporises first, while the component with the higher boiling point remains in its liquid state. With this method, ethanol can be distilled into a liquid with very high alcohol percentage of more than 95%.
There are several things to look out for when storing and handling ethanol. As a hazardous material that is highly flammable, it is of highest importance to obtain all necessary safety certifications and follow instructions meticulously. At Nedstar, we make sure to comply with all relevant ISO standards, as well as have regulated storage units. Read our blog to learn more about how to store and handle ethanol.

One of the most significant sustainability benefits of ethanol is that it is a renewable resource. Ethanol is produced by fermenting and distilling crops such as grains, sugarcane, sugar beet and fruits. These crops can be grown and harvested year on year, providing a sustainable source of ethanol that doesn't deplete the planet's finite resources. Moreover, various waste products of ethanol production can be used in sustainable agricultural practices, such as animal feed and fertiliser.
At Nedstar, we try to do what is best for the planet and its people by sourcing responsibly. We aim to work with partners who share our values and belief in creating a fairer, more sustainable world. Our ethanol is made largely from a residual stream from the sugar industry and our suppliers are carefully selected based on strict sustainability criteria. Nedstar offsets significantly more CO2 than its impact through the initiative Tree Nation, being the only ethanol supplier to achieve this.
Nedstar aims to contribute to a cleaner and better world. We take our corporate social responsibility (CSR) seriously and want to make a positive impact environmentally, socially and economically. We have therefore committed ourselves to two CSR initiatives relevant to our relationships with suppliers, customers and the planet: Tree Nation and The Green Intelligence. You can read more about it on our CSR page.
