What is neutral wheat alcohol?

Wheat alcohol is part of the neutral grain spirit family and is alcohol made from the starch of wheat. More specifically, the product is produced by fermenting and then distilling wheat into ethanol with an exceptionally high purity. Wheat alcohol is one of the most common types of grain alcohol.

Wheat alcohol is a beloved base for distilled spirits, vodka in particular. Wheat neutral alcohol is slightly sweeter than other types of grain alcohol, which results in a smoother-tasting drink. Besides the production of vodka and other alcoholic beverages, wheat-based alcohol is used in the production of food, cosmetics, medicine and beauty products.

Wheat vs other raw materials

While extra neutral alcohol made out of any raw material always has the same quality, wheat has a number of special properties that make it favourable to use for some distillers: wheat is a cleaner grain than, for example, rye or barley, meaning a less complex distillation process and higher purity after the first distillation round. Additionally, it is considered to be more sustainable than other crops since it is a relatively fast-growing crop that requires comparably less fertilizer and water.
