What is industrial ethanol made from?

Industrial ethanol is primarily made from grains (corn, wheat, barley), sugar crops (sugarcane, sugar beets, molasses), or tubers (potatoes, cassava). The common production method involves fermentation, where yeast converts sugars into ethanol, followed by distillation to purify the ethanol. In case of industrial alcohol, the final product is usually denatured with additives to make it unfit for human consumption and therefore exempt from excise tax.
